This past winter, we sent out a survey to all members province-wide to get your thoughts on a number of important subjects:

  • How you think we’re doing as an organization
  • Which areas of our work are most important to you
  • Why you joined as a member in the first place
  • Why you stay as a member
  • And more!

Below is an fairly extensive summary of the survey results, prepared by our Secretary, Leah McQueen. Of Approximately 4300 members who received the survey, we saw 829 responses – an incredible 22% return! Surveys of this type typically see under 13% return, which speaks a lot to the engagement of our membership.

    5000 MEMBERS!

This is a threshold that few of us old-timers thought possible! I joined the board of this organization in 2009 and when I took over as President in 2010, we were down to 30 paid members provincially. We had $200 in our budget, as the remaining $2000 was reserved so we could not go broke!…

  1. I’m looking at the scheduled events for the month of June and see nothing on Vancouver Island. I was at Jeepapalooza and spoke with a guy named Greg about cleaning and restoring sites on the island but learned there’s nothing upcoming. Summer is the best time for this if maximum participation is to be expected… but our summers are short. Can an event be planned for the island?

    1. Upgrades are in the works, but I believe are partially waiting on materials from RSTBC. Subscribe to the calendar, though, and get notified when we do put something in place.

  2. I agree that it would be great to see more to participate in on the island. Land owners/managers such as Mosaic, etc., who have been increasingly installing gates to limit public access, might find it mutually beneficial to work with 4WDABC to provide access for restoration/maintenance projects. More trusted eyes on their properties could be very helpful to them and us.

    1. It is definitely our hope that taking on rec sites on the Island will make our stewardship more visible to Mosaic et al. and help get our foot in the door (or gate, as the case may be). We have the possibility of adding a rec site on Nitinat Lake as well, which would be a lot “closer to home” for them. Dealing with government entities, of course (Rec Sites and Trails, in these cases) means things churn along at their own pace – it’s been three years since we first visited Side Bay/Gooding Cove and other sites in the area along with the District Rec Officer to start the process, and we just signed onto those last fall, with the first real work to start this summer.

The other side of the equation, of course, is getting the local volunteers out not only do the initial work, but to look after the regular upkeep on these sites. Hopefully we’ll see LOTS of participation there!
